Flutter vs React Native: How We Actually Choose for Client Projects

📱

“Which framework should we use for our app?” is the question we hear most, and the honest answer is: it depends on your team, your roadmap, and your budget — not on benchmark charts. We ship apps with both frameworks, so here is how we actually decide.

Where Each One Shines

Flutter gives you pixel-perfect control and a single rendering engine, which means your app looks identical on every device. That consistency is gold for brand-heavy consumer apps and custom UI. React Native leans on native components and the JavaScript ecosystem, which makes it a natural fit when your team already lives in React and your app follows platform conventions.

The Questions That Decide It

  • Who will maintain this in year two? If your web team is React-based, React Native keeps one hiring pool. If you’re hiring fresh, Flutter developers are increasingly easy to find.
  • How custom is the design? Heavy animation and non-standard UI favour Flutter. Standard lists, forms and feeds are effortless in both.
  • What integrations do you need? Check the plugin ecosystem for your must-haves — payments, maps, analytics — before committing. A missing SDK costs more than any framework difference.

What About Performance?

For the vast majority of business apps, users cannot tell the difference. Both compile to fast, smooth experiences when written well. Poor architecture makes either one slow; good architecture makes either one fly. Spend your energy on state management and API design, not framework debates.

Our Default Recommendation

When a client has no strong constraint, we default to Flutter for consumer-facing products with distinctive design, and React Native for teams with an existing React codebase and internal tools. Either way, plan for a shared design system and automated testing from sprint one — that decision matters more than the framework itself.
